Wowwowwow! My little non-binary heart was just sooo held by this piece that it took me weeks to read it, like a sentence at a time. I can't even remember where I connected with you (Holsticism or HBA, maybe?) but I've really been sitting with how I learned all the analytical skills and was taught to run away from creativity / poetic existence, and that's just SO NOT a binary. I used to teach data viz and I wish I'd had these amazing resources you share back then, but also I'm so overjoyed getting to just enjoy them for the sake of pleasure. My work is really sitting in the place of structural thinking alchemized with a more flowing way of being right now, I have a newsletter at queermagical.com if you're curious but otherwise may reach out in the future about the possibility of collaboration!

Avory!! Thank you so much for this note, I love that you used to teach data viz and are also now exploring all those unmapped in-betweens. Thank you so much for sitting with my writing and sharing your thoughts, I'm excited to checkout your newsletter! (Also it was probably Holisticism, haha.)

I definitely agree with your comparison to morning pages and how visualizing something truly forms one's relationship with whatever the sticky something is. appreciating your ability to share something that's a riff on other artists while simultaneously calling out that you're inspired by the other artists' art.. :-)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! And yes, I wanted to be abundantly (maybe harshly, in hindsight) clear that this was learning and not profiting from the styles of others. Thank you for touching on that!

Thanks for writing about taking data visualization beyond data. I took Tufte's class a really long time ago, and appreciate this fresh perspective of what lies beyond, and how you are currently pushing on it. Keep writing. Really loving the theme of these posts.
